Some projects come together piece by piece—and that was certainly the case with this beautiful basement transformation. When I was brought onto the Verseman family’s basement project, they were already mid-renovation and working with a contractor (Droste & Sons Construction Company). Many of the big design decisions had been made, but there was still so much room to add intention, personality, and polish to the spaces.
My role was to help guide those remaining design choices—paint accents, wallpaper, lighting, hardware, and furnishings—and bring it all together with cohesive styling that truly felt like them. From thoughtful renderings and mood boards to final decor installation, we infused every corner of this lower level with meaningful moments and family-first design.
The Vision
Our goal was to create a basement that could flex for both entertaining and everyday family life. Think sophisticated comfort with playful, personal touches. Whether it was incorporating the family's love of sports in the game room or adding curated artwork that reflects their roots and style, we focused on layered details and livable charm.

The Kitchenette + Bar
This space isn’t just for basement lounging—it’s also a functional extension of the family’s pool area, making it a true hub for entertaining all year long. The Verseman family had already selected the most gorgeous soft grey cabinetry from (DKI Manufacturing) and a stunning quartz counter that continues up the wall as a full-height backsplash. The result is clean and modern, but with plenty of warmth and depth.

To finish the space, we leaned into brass hardware and lighting for a subtle hit of glam, then styled the counter with artwork and greenery to soften the lines and make it feel layered and lived in. It’s one of those spaces that feels effortless—but every detail is doing the work.
The Living Room Lounge
Right off the kitchen, the main living space was designed to be casual and inviting—a spot to cozy up with a movie, watch the game, or hang with family and friends. We kept the foundation timeless with neutral tones and layered in warmth through soft textiles, woven accents, and a few collected pieces that bring character and charm.

It’s a perfect example of the “sophisticated + playful” balance we aimed for throughout the basement. Styled but never stuffy, with pieces that reflect the family’s lifestyle and make the space feel like a natural extension of their home upstairs.

Guest Bedroom Retreat
The guest bedroom blends serene neutrals, soft textures, and timeless patterns. It’s cozy and welcoming, with thoughtful details like a rattan wall hanging and checkered pillows to keep it interesting but calm.

We kept the existing furniture in the guest bedroom, but it ended up taking on a completely new feel thanks to the thoughtful updates layered in and around it. What once felt a little dated now feels fresh and inviting—with just the right mix of texture and tone.
New brass hardware gave the nightstand and dresser an instant lift, while soft patterned wallpaper, tailored window treatments, and layered bedding brought warmth and visual interest. It’s proof that you don’t always need to start from scratch—a few strategic updates can completely transform a space and help older pieces shine in a new light.

The Kids Game Room
A true nod to the family's favorite teams and hobbies, this space is full of Pottery Barn–style energy—bold but tasteful. Since it’s open to the living room and connected to the rest of the basement, it needed to strike a balance: casual and cool for the kids, but still polished enough to flow with the overall design.

We kept the furniture minimal to give the boys plenty of space to spread out and play, while adding two leather pouf loungers that bring in both comfort and a laid-back, sporty vibe. With just the right mix of personal touches and open space, the room feels fun and functional—without ever feeling chaotic or out of place.

Gallery Wall Moments
Throughout the space, we created layered gallery walls using a mix of sourced prints. From vintage-inspired typography to playful illustrations and meaningful nods to the family’s story, each piece adds a dose of personality that feels uniquely them.
Curating art that reflected their varying interests, roots, and hobbies—while still feeling cohesive with each other and the overall design—was a bit of a challenge. But the result is one of my favorite elements in the entire project. It feels thoughtful, beautifully collected, and deeply personal—a true reflection of the people who live here.
A Final Reveal (Just for Fun!)
To celebrate the finished space, I styled everything out and did a casual reveal with the family. Seeing their reactions was such a highlight—it’s always rewarding when a space feels not just beautiful, but personal and lived-in.
Whether you’re taking on a full remodel or just refreshing a few spaces, this project is proof that it’s never too late to layer in meaning and warmth. Design is in the details—and I loved helping this family bring their story to life, one room at a time.
With Love in Every Season,
Andrea
