There is something truly magical about creating your own Halloween costumes. The process not only allows you to tap into your creativity but also brings a sense of joy and excitement. And when it comes to making costumes with your little girl, the happiness multiplies tenfold. Plus store-bought costumes can get pricey, and if you're like me, I like to improvise and use what I have. I literally didn't buy a thing when I made these for my girls! You too might already have many or all of these items required.
Now that we've embraced the magic of creating a DIY costume, it's time to dive into the ingredients that will make your little witch's costume truly enchanting. The beauty of crafting your own costume is the freedom to personalize it and add special touches that reflect your child's unique personality.
First, let's talk colors. Traditionally, witches are associated with black, but don't be afraid to play with color or to incorporate additional colors. Whatever princess dress your little girl has stashed away will become the base of her one-of-a-kind witch costume. If it's short-sleeved you can always have them layer a long-sleeved shirt underneath. My oldest wore a black long-sleeve shirt under her witch dress, while my youngest wore a purple shirt that matched her princess dress, both worked!
Next, let's Witch it up.. NO SEWING required. I used some old black fabric I had lying around, and starting from the back of the neck, crossed it over the front of her chest making an "x", then connected the fabric and tied it in the back. You can use the black creepy cloth to do this. In addition, you can also safety pin a cape of sorts on the back of the dress which I did with a creepy grey cloth I had lying around
That's it on the dress! Now for those little details that really make your witch shine. Grab any fun tights or leggings that you have and contain some black accents. My oldest wore all black leggings, while my youngest had a pair of black sweater tights with colored polka dots that looked adorable and added some whimsy to her costume. I recommend pairing with a pair of boots, because that just looks more witchy.
Next, don't underestimate the power of hair and makeup. I found these fun hair extensions at Walmart for just a few dollars. I wasn't able to find a link for them, so I have provided similar ones from Amazon that come in an assortment of colors. My girls loved these!!! They thought they were the coolest things and I have to admit, they really made the costume come to life. For the make-up, I didn't go too crazy but added some eye shadow and glitter in coordinating colors to their "princess" aka witch dress. I also found some super cute fake Halloween tattoos that we put on their face. Experiment with fun colors and designs to make her feel truly magical.
Remember, the key to making your little witch's costume stand out is to let her imagination guide you. Encourage her to share her ideas and preferences, and together, create a costume that will cast a spell of joy and enchantment this Halloween!
